When Cleaning Works (Most Cases)

Cleaning is the right call when the filter is blocked by accumulated soot but is otherwise physically intact. This is the situation in the majority of DPF failures — the filter hasn't broken, it's just full.

Signs cleaning will work:

• DPF warning light has come on (stage 1 or 2) but the car is still driveable
• The fault codes point to DPF pressure differential (soot load too high) rather than physical damage
• The filter has not been left in a severely blocked state for months
• There is no evidence of oil contamination (from a blown turbo seal or piston ring failure)
• The back-pressure readings across the filter are high but not extreme

• Oil contamination — engine oil in the exhaust (from a failing turbo or worn piston rings) coats the filter with a substance that can't be burned off — cleaning won't restore it
• Total collapse — the internal structure has broken down, causing fragments that risk damaging the engine
• Severe chronic blockage — a filter left in a critically blocked state for many months, repeatedly forced into extreme regen temperatures, may be beyond the point where cleaning restores adequate flow

The Root Cause Question

Whether you clean or replace, the most important thing is identifying why the DPF blocked. If you replace a DPF without fixing the root cause, the new filter will block at the same rate.

Common root causes to check:

• Driving pattern — short urban journeys that never complete a regen cycle. Solution: longer weekly runs, or accept the filter needs periodic professional cleaning.

• EGR valve fault — excess soot being recirculated overloads the filter faster than normal.
• Wrong engine oil — non-Low SAPS oil degrades the filter over time. Check your handbook for the correct specification.
